Campus-Wide Reading Time at LOES
At Lone Oak Elementary, we are excited to announce a new initiative that’s sure to have a lasting impact on student achievement! We’ve implemented a campus-wide read-aloud time during the last 10-15 minutes of each school day. During this time, teachers are reading aloud to their students, working on essential reading strategies, and creating a love for reading that will benefit students both academically and beyond.
The benefits of reading aloud to children are well-known, and this new initiative brings a number of advantages:
Vocabulary Development
Listening to stories exposes children to new words, helping to develop a rich vocabulary. Children with a broader vocabulary have an edge in understanding and mastering reading.
Improved Listening Skills
When students focus on a story being read aloud, their listening skills and comprehension improve. Teachers can ask questions during the reading to further boost understanding and engagement.
Increased Attention Span
As students engage with stories daily, they build habits that help them focus for longer periods—an important skill for academic success.
Critical Thinking
Teachers can use reading time to ask students to think beyond the story, encouraging them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Enhanced Language Skills
By hearing stories read aloud, students are exposed to more sophisticated language structures, helping them develop vocabulary and phonological awareness.
Literacy Skills
This reading time supports students in mastering phonics, understanding both the spoken and written word, and expanding their vocabulary.
We do not want your student to miss out on these incredible benefits. This initiative is about more than just stories—it’s about building a strong foundation for success in reading and beyond!
